It takes a village. Caring for our seniors is a community-wide endeavor.
It takes a village. Caring for our seniors is a community-wide endeavor.
As Tenant Support Coordinator for Nevada Rural Housing Authority, I have the opportunity to work with many different community organizations and resources. Our philosophy is that when everyone comes together we can make a difference. The fact is, we must come together in order to provide this dependent population with the support and care they need.
As an example, recently one of our 85-year old senior residents had a heart attack. He was released from the hospital without additional care. He came to me to see if I could assist in obtaining help with personal care and housekeeping. I contacted The State Division of Aging Services to find this support, but due to recent cutbacks and limited resources, there was a 12 to 18 month waiting list.
Without that support, a few days later the same resident was back in the hospital. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, I contacted a local hospice social worker whom I’d met through the Senior Service Network. She in turn contacted a social work acquaintance at the hospital. By the end of the week, a homecare provider was assisting the resident with his personal care and housekeeping needs. It took a bit more time and an extra trip to the hospital, but this gentleman did finally receive the help and support he required to stay in his home.
Partnering with outside agencies makes all the difference in getting seniors the help they need to maintain independence and stay in their homes. Research shows that seniors age much more successfully when they are able to live at home with the support they need. Nevada Rural Housing Authority is doing its part to help Carson City seniors live in dignity and comfort on their own terms.
