Weatherization Assistance helps communities pay it forward

We are all experiencing the effects of this economy, some worse than others. Every day we watch our hard earned dollars disappear as we pay our bills and try to make ends meet. In the midst of everyone scrambling to stay afloat, there are things we can do to manage our home expenses and, indirectly, help those around us.

The low-income Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is one example. WAP was created to save energy and improve the quality of life in households around our community. The bonus of weatherizing a home is that it benefits more than the home’s residents. When one home is weatherized, the entire community benefits.

When we can conserve energy in one home, we lower that home’s utility bills and leave more cash in the pocket of the owner/renter. With more cash in their pocket, that person has more money to spend on other goods and services in their community – for rent, for the grocery store, for childcare.

Fixing this drafty heating duct can improve the quality of life in an entire neighborhood.

Old furnaces, old windows, leaky heat supply ducts and even incandescent light bulbs all contribute to wasted energy. For households that qualify, WAP can correct these inefficiencies and help create a community-wide mini economic stimulus.
