NRHA in the Record Courier - Housing weatherization program exceeds goal in 2010

Nevada Rural Housing Authority measures the success of its weatherization assistance program by how many low-income households with limited resources are helped throughout Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties.

By any measure, 2010 was a banner year. The authority's weatherization team maximized resources, stretched budgets and managed to exceed their goal of households served by 72 percent. For their innovative and creative approaches in the field of weatherization, NRHA was presented with the 2010 Pushing the Envelope Award by its peers at the regional Energy OutWest Conference in Reno that hosted more than 1,000 attendees from 38 states.

More than 200 homes in Northern Nevada were weatherized in 2010. Of those, 39 homes were in Douglas County. Participants on average saved 660 kilowatt hours and 427 therms annually, equating to slightly more than $650 a year in energy savings per home.

NRHA's services typically include ceiling, floor and duct insulation, duct leakage sealing, window replacement, exterior door replacement, water heater and water pipe insulation, furnace replacement, refrigerator replacement, carbon monoxide alarm installation and attic insulation.

To qualify for weatherization assistance, families must meet certain household income limits and apply for assistance through NRHA. For more information, contact (775) 283-0099.
