Pioche Apartments Grand Opening Celebrates Award-Winning Rural Housing Innovation
Nevada Rural Housing, elected officials, project partners and community members gathered in May 2026 to celebrate the grand opening of Pioche Apartments, a transformative redevelopment that has turned a deteriorated World War II-era housing complex into a nationally recognized model for rural housing innovation.
What makes Pioche Apartments especially significant is the partnership behind it.
The project delivers 32 modern, energy-efficient apartment homes while preserving long-term affordability for residents and honoring the unique character of one of Nevada’s most historic communities.
For years, Lincoln County worked to preserve and maintain the aging property, which represented the last remaining asset of the county’s former housing authority. When the opportunity arose to reimagine the site for the future, county leaders partnered with Nevada Rural Housing to bring new investment, expertise and long-term stewardship to the project.
“Pioche Apartments represents the very best of what can happen when local leadership, community commitment and innovative housing solutions come together,” said Bill Brewer, Executive Director of Nevada Rural Housing. “Lincoln County placed tremendous trust in our organization, and we viewed that responsibility as much bigger than constructing new apartments. Together, we preserved an important community asset and created something that will serve Pioche residents for generations.”
The $15.7 million redevelopment replaced 18 aging units with 32 newly constructed apartment homes designed specifically for rural Nevada. The community incorporates several innovative features, including owner-paid utilities, solar energy installations, fiber internet access, all-electric units and architectural elements inspired by Pioche’s historic mining heritage.
The project has already earned national recognition. Earlier this year, Pioche Apartments received the HOME Award of Excellence from National Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies, which honors outstanding affordable housing developments that demonstrate innovation, impact and excellence in serving their communities.
The recognition highlights a project that has become more than a housing development. Pioche Apartments demonstrates how rural communities can leverage partnership, creativity and local vision to preserve housing opportunities and strengthen the places people call home.
Pioche Apartments was made possible through a collaborative effort involving Lincoln County, Nevada Rural Housing, Nevada Housing Division, Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, USDA Rural Development, Rural Community Assistance Corporation, Lincoln County Telephone System and numerous additional public and private partners whose shared commitment helped bring the project to life.
